Topics
This lecture covers multimedia services offered over data networks. Basics of networking are supposed to be known. The lecture is divided into the following topics:- content-level technologies: further technologies needed for storing, transmitting, and processing of multimedia data via networks. In particular this includes security issues, rights management, billing, and payment
- multimedia applications and services: services for individual communication (e.g. IP telephony, video conferences, collaborative media) and for mass communiaction (e.g. web radio, web tv)
- network-level technologies: specific network technologies needed for multimedia data transmission, e.g. real-time transport protocols, signaling protocols (like SIP). This part will be covered only briefly, since there are some overlaps to lectures in the area of computer networking.
Integration into Studies
- For graduate students of media informatics or graduate students of informatics with existing media informatics knowledge
Requirements
- intermediate diploma (media informatics or informatics)
- basic knowledge of network technologies
- basic media informatics knowledge, e.g. from the "Digital Meda" and "Media technics" lectures
- english language skills
Podcasts
As an experimental service, lectures will be offered for download as Podcast (see table below). The file format used is the "enhanced podcast file" as defined by Apple (file extension .mp4b, compatible with .mp4a). These files contain an audio recording in MPEG-4 AAC encoding as well as a segmentation according to slide titles and the slide contents as still pictures (cover artwork). For optimal reproduction the QuickTime Player (version 6.5.2 or later) or Apple iTunes (Version 4.9 or later) are recommended. Both software packages are available for free for Windows and MacOS. A pure audio playback should be possible with any recent audio player software. Of course, the files are also compatible to iPod and video iPod!Lecture timetable and slides
