Research Interests

I'm interested in indirect touch interaction, in particular in designing bimanual touch interaction techniques that incorporate a secondary touch screen as additional input device. The goal of my research is (a) to understand the implications and potentials of touch screens as indirect input devices, (b) to design interaction techniques that complement, enhance or challenge established ones and (c) to provide guidelines to inform the design of user interfaces targeted at bimanual indirect touch input.

Research Projects

Indirect Touch-input Techniques Applied to Finger-forming 3D Models
We address novel two-handed interaction techniques in dual display interactive workspaces combining direct and indirect touch input. In particular, we introduce the notion of a horizontal tool space with task-dependent graphical input areas. These input areas are designed as single purpose control elements for specific functions and allow users to manipulate objects displayed on a vertical screen using simple one- and two-finger touch gestures and both hands. For demonstrating this concept, we use 3D modeling tasks as a specific application area.

Understanding Indirect 2D Touch Panning
We present experimental work which explores the effect of touch indirectness on spatial memory and navigation performance in a 2D panning task. In this regard and based on the theory of embodied cognition, prior work has observed performance increases for direct touch input over indirect mouse input. Our results indicate that spatial memory performance is not decreased by a spatial separation of touch input gestures and visual display, and therefore primarily relies on the involved kinesthetic cues.

Exploring Two-handed Multi-Touch Input
To better understand the characteristics of two-handed indirect multi-touch input, we conducted a docking task experiment that asked participants to align rectangles with other rectangles using one-finger dragging as well as two-finger pinch-to-zoom and rotation gestures in three conditions: (1) using the dominant hand only, (2) using the nondominant hand only and (3) using both hands simultaneously.

User Interface Case Studies on a Curved Touchscreen
We explored user interface design on a curved multi-touch display in several application domains, e.g. music production and analysis, gaming, collaborative design, gaming and 3D interaction.
