Contents

Despite the increasing dissemination of mobile technologies, the usage of mobile applications and services is still lagging behind their actual potential as they are limited by different constraints:

  • complex and tedious development and setup
  • usability and interaction issues due to device constraints (hardware, software, ...)
  • discovery of mobile services
  • complicated interfaces and interactions
  • limited trust due to security and privacy issues
In this context, the practical focuses on the topic of "Simple and Secure Mobile Applications". This work will be integrated with the EU-projects Simple Mobile Services (SMS) and Discreet and will explore how to make mobile applications easier to use and easier to trust.
The first part of the practical will provide a theoretical and technical introduction to the design, implementation and evaluation of mobile applications in general. In the following project phase, the students will apply this knowledge and work in small teams to develop mobile Java ME applications with a focus on the following topics:
  • mobile services
  • interaction with the real world using e.g. NFC, GPS, Bluetooth, ...
  • solutions for increasing privacy and trust
  • mobile usability and interface design
  • backend-solutions for the authoring of mobile services
  • ...
