Syllabus
Users often lack confidence when making security and privacy decisions in the digital world. Examples include but are not limited to users not feeling confident about setting up and using VPNs, properly configuring their home network, choosing strong passwords, or identifying phishing emails. Reasons for this are, among others, complex security and privacy concepts as well as measures, such as phishing awareness campaigns, which foster a feeling of learned helplessness among users by demonstrating their inability to behave securely.
The objective of this course is to mitigate such effects by supporting users in building up self-efficacy when it comes to acting in a secure and privacy-preserving way. From the literature, it is known that self-efficacy most effectively builds up as users have positive experiences or learn of the success of others they consider equally skilled.
To this end, the idea is to design and implement tangible technologies that facilitate sharing successful security and privacy behavior. More specifically, in this course, we will explore how tangible technology for use in communal spaces (e.g., coffee kitchens) can be designed so that self-efficacy-enhancing experiences are solicited, shared, and perceived by the inhabitants of the space.
