Master Study Programms
The Master's programs are consecutive courses of study that are based on a Bachelor's degree in media informatics. Admission requirement is a first professional university degree or an equivalent degree from Germany or abroad in media informatics, computer science or a related subject. The Master's program consists of 120 ECTS credits. The standard time of study is four semesters, the 4th semester is dedicated to the preparation of the master thesis. Successful graduates of the Master's program will be awarded the academic degree „Master of Science (M.Sc.)“ by the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics.
Study programs
The working groups Media Informatics and Human-Computer Interaction supervise the following master programs together with the other chairs of the Institute for Informatics at the LMU Munich:
- Master Media Informatics
- Master Media Informatics with applications in Media Management
- Master Media Informatics with applications in Media Design
- Master Human-Computer-Interaction
All four of these master programs are consecutive courses of study based on the Bachelor of Media Informatics.
In addition, the Institute of Computer Science at LMU offers the master programs Computer Science and Bioinformatics.
Study contents
All four master programs consist of 80-90% media informatics. The remaining 10-20% consist of one of the three optional application subjects (Media Management, Media Design, Human-Computer Interaction). For studies without application subjects, the necessary ECTS points must be earned additionally from courses at the Institute of Computer Science. The study of media informatics is a variant of the computer science program. Media informatics is more application-oriented than computer science; this means that more emphasis is put on the development of applications.
All four versions offer flexibility in selecting courses to the students, so that students can specialize in certain areas. The following graphic visualizes the distribution of mandatory, elective and applied courses.
In principle, the master's program Human-Computer Interaction can be understood as a master's program in media informatics with an application subject of Human-Computer Interaction. The following differences to the other media informatics master programs with their respective application subject exist:
The lectures "Human-Computer Interaction II" and "Information Visualization" become compulsory courses. MMI II covers advanced forms of human-machine-interaction, such as interactive interfaces, instrumented environments and augmented reality. In addition, two design workshops are added, which are the logical continuation of "Interaction Design", "Concept Development" and "Project Competence Multimedia" (industrial relevance) from the bachelor program. The emphasized computer science relation remains in the word "computer" instead of "machine".
How the study program works
The Master Media Informatics can be taken up in the winter as well as in the summer semester. Compared to the Bachelor's program, there is greater freedom of choice, and the Master's program is more scientifically oriented. You can find further information on planning your timetable on the semester planning pages, in the slides for the introductory event for Master students and in the information sheet for Master students.
The media informatics master programs are not offered by the chairs of media informatics and human-machine interaction alone, but in conjunction with the chairs of the LMU Computer Science department. However, the chairs of Media Informatics and Human-Computer Interaction conduct many of the courses with media-related topics.
Career options
Their career-based practical training and scientific education prepares graduates for a wide range of applications in research, business, industry, trade, administration and the service sector. Possible employers are multimedia companies, advertising agencies, software houses, telecommunications companies, broadcasting companies and publishing houses, but also training, IT, PR and sales departments of most companies. The experience of previous graduates has shown that, in addition to these, companies from completely different industrial sectors, such as the automotive industry in its' field of developing operating concepts, are also interested in the typical profile of this training.
