Eye Gaze Tracking
In Interactive Displays: Natural Human-Interface Technologies (ed A. K. Bhowmik), John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, Chichester, UK. doi: 10.1002/9781118706237.ch8 (bib)
We extensively use our eyes for day-to-day communications, such as addressing people or objects with our gaze. If we want human-computer interaction to be similar to human-human interaction, then the computer needs such gaze awareness. This chapter provides an in-depth review of eye gaze tracking technologies, with a focus on using our gaze for interacting with the content on a display. It starts with some basic knowledge on the human eyes and an overview of eye-tracking technologies. Then it explains the main objections and obstacles for eye gaze interactions, followed by a summary on eye-tracking research over the last three decades. It continues with three different approaches to gaze interaction, and gives a detailed presentation of gaze pointing, gaze gestures, and gaze as context. The chapter closes with an outlook on further development of eye gaze interactions.
