Abstract

Recently novel technologies incorporating computational support were introduced in film production, e.g. the IRIS [1] system in Alfonso Cuaróns Gravity (2013). With new tools of this kind often own operators are introduced, as the usage often is considered complex by traditionally trained camera operators. Also few examples exist that can be controlled by camera operators themselves.

However designs focusing on the users of these systems seem to be rare. By applying user-centered research methods, more details on the work of camera operators should be found out. Based on interviews with expert users, an overview of what is important to camera operators, where human shortcomings are and where technology might be beneficial will be given.

Opportunities for the application of novel technologies for use by camera operators themselves will be derived found and further concepts will be developed.
