Mobile Interaction with the Real World: An Evaluation and Comparison of Physical Mobile Interaction Techniques In Proceedings of the European Conference on Ambient Intelligence (AmI 2007), Darmstadt, Germany, November 7 - 10, 2007, ISBN 978-3-540-76651-3 |
Mobile devices are more and more used for mobile interactions with things, places and people in the real world. So far there is no clear guidance which interaction technique is preferred by the user in different contexts. This paper presents an experimental comparison of different interaction techniques. To collect real usage data four different prototypes were implemented: a system for mobile interaction in smart environments, a mobile tourist guide, a mobile museum guide and a prototype for mobile interaction with advertisement posters. In each setting an experimental comparison with regard to how simple, enjoyable, innovative, and reliable the interaction is, was performed. Based on the results of these studies, which involved in total over 60 participants, advantages and disadvantages of these interaction techniques are described. Context-specific user preferences are presented for the interaction techniques, to help application designers and developers decide which interaction technique(s) should be integrated into their application and which consequences this has. |
