General search tips

(apply to Google and many other search engines)

• Use English versions (e.g. only the English Google Scholar lets you select a subject area)
• Use Google for calculation and unit conversion. BTW: this is obviously powered by the GNU units command.
• Seeing only 10 search results per page is tedious. Increase the number.
• Use boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), quotes ("") and dashes (-), numerical ranges (1960..1980)
• Limit your search by using e.g. site:, filetype:, link:
• Try different combinations of search terms
