Basic Rules of Scientific Writing

cite sources
do not claim anything you did not either prove or find in the literature!
do not "optimize" your findings
do not write boringly

Searching and Finding

not everything can be found online
do not trust a single source
save/bookmark your sources

General search tips

(apply to Google and many other search engines)

Use English versions (e.g. only the English Google Scholar lets you select a subject area)
Use Google for calculation and unit conversion. BTW: this is obviously powered by the GNU units command.
Seeing only 10 search results per page is tedious. Increase the number.
Use boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), quotes ("") and dashes (-), numerical ranges (1960..1980)
Limit your search by using e.g. site:, filetype:, link:
Try different combinations of search terms
